Ski touring in Bucegi Mts. – Southern Carpathians

Bucegi. ski touring

Our mountains are full covered with snow and the winter season started already.

Last days with had a 2 days ski tour in Bucegi Mountains, in the backyard of our office from Zarnesti – Brasov.

The weather was far from perfect, but the snow was great!

First day we did the first section of Bucegi Haute Route (3 days tour), which means +1.200m up to almost 2.000m alt.

According to the weather conditions (wind and snowfall) following day we stayed low, skiing at the forest level (around 1.500m alt.) on the north side of Bucegi Mts. But the fun was great!

Snowshoeing in Eastern Carpathians

snowshoeing. Harghita

Romanian Eastern Carpathians starts from Brasov to east, ending up in the north, at the border with Ukraine.

Less rocky compared with the famous Southern Carpathians, the Eastern range offers great winter adventures for those looking for remote areas with poor way marking system, where outdoor navigation (map and compass) is a must.

Recently we did some lovely snowshoeing tours in Harghita Mountains, the area with Romanian Hungarian native speakers, with their specific culture and traditions.

We found deep snow and fantastic forests, as usual!

Ski touring in Bucegi Mts.

Bucegi Mts. are situated very close to Bucharest (1.5 – 2 hours) on the way to Brasov.

Sinaia ski resort with Peles Castle are on the south east side of these mountains, Prahova valley being the most important road access in the area.

The highest peak – Omu (2.504m alt.) is one of the 13th peaks above 2.500m altitude from Romanian Carpathians, a target in summer and winter for those who want to collect them all!

Last days we skinned up on the west side of Bucegi Mts. very close to Omu peak (+ 1.280m) for a long and lovely ski descent back in the valley toward Bran village (Dracula Castle).

We did not actually reach the highest peak because we did not wanted to. The last section was pure ice, not very funny for ski. We found better snow lower in the valley, sheltered by the wind and not higher up!

A great ski tour with some great persons!
